Happy 2017! Want to feel better this year? Whether you are 17 or 70, there are a few simple things you can do to help your body function at its best (unless of course you doctor has specifically provided you with different recommendations). Starting with small changes can lead to bigger changes which can in turn lead to a healthier happier you!
- Eat More Plants
A plant-based diet has many health benefits, including preventing/reversing Type 2 diabetes, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, and helping your digestive system run smoothly. Reducing your intake of meat and dairy translates into less dietary cholesterol, less saturated fat, and more fiber, all of which bring about better health!
- Move Your Body
Physical activity has a profound effect on quality of life. Age-appropriate and condition-appropriate exercise, whether it be an afternoon hike, morning run, walk around the block, working with weights, or any other form of movement, improves mood and can help protect you from many health problems. Obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, back pain, and high blood pressure can all be combated with proper exercise!
- Set a Bedtime
Sleep plays an essential role in our overall health, and is vital for memory, immune function, and healing. Sticking to a regular sleep-wake schedule is important for getting quality sleep and maintaining the body’s natural circadian rhythms. I use the Bedtime feature in my iPhone clock app to prompt me when it is time to get ready for bed, and to wake me up at the same time very day. So simple, yet so important!
