February is American Heart Month!

Happy Heart Month! With heart disease being the leading cause of death in the United States, it is important that we take care of our hearts. The best ways to accomplish this are with a heart-healthy diet and regular physical activity.

According to the American Heart Association, most plant-based diets are lower in trans fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol than non-plant-based diets. Studies have shown that people who eat vegan diets show lower risks of heart disease and high blood pressure. And contrary to popular belief, it is possible to enjoy a wide range of nutritious and delicious foods without eating animal products. Many people are surprised to learn that vegans do not live off of lettuce alone!

The American Heart Association recommends 40 minutes of aerobic exercise three to four times per week. If 40 minutes seems too time-consuming, or too tiring, the great thing is that it does not have to be completed all at once! You can divide your exercise up into 10, 15, or 20 minute increments and still reap the benefits. Along with lowering your risk of heart disease, exercise helps control weight, improve mood, and gives you more energy.

For American Heart Month (and every month), provide your heart with a healthy diet and ample exercise, two of the best gifts you can give it. 🙂
