A New Type of Dementia

An international team of researchers has newly outlined a type of dementia that may actually be more common than Alzheimer’s, but has been under-recognized and may have lead to incorrect diagnoses.

Called limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy, the new type may often mirror the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, but it affects the brain differently and develops more slowly.

By defining a new type of dementia (and overhauling the concept of what the disease is), the international team hopes to spur further research and, one day, treatments for the devastating disease.
